September 1st. After flights from Charlotte to Atlanta, Atlanta to Amsterdam, then 11 hours to Cape Town, we stumbled off the plane and through passport control. We found the smiling fellow from Hotel Verde and were off to the hotel and the on the way, heard about the hotel's wind turbines, solar panels, gray water system and power generating elevators. Only open a week, the hotel is elegant and amazingly green. We just wanted to test the beds.
Next morning we met Rick and Mary for breakfast, which was a wonderful spread of all sorts of delicious fruits, breads, cheeses and hot dishes.
After Rick and I picked up our car, we waited in the lobby for the arrival of Rod and Fiona Bulman, the Horder's long time friends, who live in South Africa.
As we drive along, it's still hard to believe we are in the southern hemisphere, at the tip of Africa, closer to Antarctica than to home. It's also hard to remember that we need to drive on the left side of the road and that the controls in the car are a little different from those at home. Doesn't everyone here signal a left turn by turning on the windshield wipers?
Driving north towards Langebaan, we stop for lunch at a winery, where we sample the wide selection of cheeses before buying some to take along with us. The next stop is another winery where we load up with some very good and very well priced varieties, including the local specialty, Pinotage.
Arriving at the coast, we make our way to Club Mykonos, where we will spend the next week.
