September 3rd. At 9am, the sound of the surf outside broke through the sleepiness and I ventured out to see the view from our small terrace. Mykonos is on a cove of Langebaan Bay off the Atlantic and we are on one side looking across at the beach. The sound of the waves is a constant soundtrack for the resort.
Today we are off to the West Coast National Park for our first look at the spring flowers. Alongside the road and covering the landscape are carpets of white, yellow, pink and orange flowers turned to face the sun.
We drove around and through the park, stopping to examine particularly nice or extravagant displays.
An additional bonus was the wildlife also on display including a meercat, ostriches, elands, flamingos, gemsbok, guinea hens and partridges. At one point I saw a tortoise by the road and Rick wanted to get out for a look, ignoring the caveat in the guide to "Please do not pick up tortoises or disturb any wildlife." The tortoise repaid this infraction by emptying bladder and bowel copiously down Rick's pant leg.
Lunch was outside at the Geelbeck restaurant in the park. Many birds were fluttering overhead including a colony of weaver birds with their fascinating nests. We had pickled fish - a local specialty - smoked snoeke and two currys. The pumpkin pie and malva pudding were especially good desserts.
Leaving the park we stopped at the shore to see the Atlantic waves crashing on the huge rocks and collect a few sea shells.
Tonight, dinner at Pearly's including local specialty fish Kingklip.
