City as museum

There are virtually no modern buildings in Venice. It must be very hard to renovate or modify a building.
Rising waters make many ground floors unusable. Some buildings lean or show repaired cracks.
Our pensione is in a building constructed in 1288. We have modern conveniences, but evidence of the past.
Some portions of the walls and ceiling in our room are not replastered and painted, revealing what looks like original fresco decoration.
